I don’t get twitter
Ok I admit it: I don’t get twitter. Unless you are mega famous who cares what you are doing anyway? And as for business executives using this ‘next best thing’ to communicate with employees, even 140 letters can constitute the most boring conversation ever. Is this just another social networking site (fad?) that finds it difficult to appeal to anyone other than the chronically idle or have I missed the plot?
It’s a bit like a blog except a blog tells people what you are thinking. Either way, who cares. (You walked into that one).
I think Twitter will find a niche space for Brands wishing to communicate with stakeholders or for special occasions such as product launches and trade-shows.
To me it’s another Facebook. Can’t see myself ever needing it (or wanting to even use it). Another addition to CPI (Continuous Partial Interruption)
Yup I did walk into this one. Heard people who believe in Twitter are called ‘Twits’ ………
Well one of the twits just recently sold his breaking news twitter account to CNN and is now extremely wealthy.
I had no idea you guys hung out here!
I think the thing with Twitter is that you can’t define it as a simple “micro blogging” platform… just like you can’t say a car is only about getting you from A to B.
There is a great article here: http://www.gottaquirk.com/2009/06/22/twitter-winning-formulas/ – check out some of the example uses. I really liked the Hyatt Hotel one.
I’ve also heard that Facebook are really worried about Twitter, because it’s feed is public and very, very fresh.
We don’t – I comment and then get harrassed by someone by the name of John McLaren. I do admit his contribution confirms that intelligent life reads this blog though. My comment about Twitter was more tongue in cheek – there are some really good examples of how it is being used successfully in media – a number of newspapers have seen an increase in their readership because of tweets intended by them to capture the interest of potential readers. They are also use dby radio stations to personalise their jocks and Sky news used Twitter to get insights into the voting intentions of British politicians when they elected a new Speaker. Most social networking sites though are struggling to retain their users – they are all growing in impressive leaps and bounds but any astute marketer knows that churn is devastating to a brand and an ability to retain customers is in the long term is how to ensure sustainability.
